AUTOMOTIVE CASTING FACILITY INVESTS IN ALUMINUM FURNACE AIR PRE-HEATER
Products from this facility include oil and water pumps, engine and transmission parts, and brake components supplied to meet the growing number of vehicles and engines produced by automobile manufacturers in the United States.

Challenges relevant to this facility include its high particulate exhaust environment and a very small amount of available space in the proximity of the furnace heat source. The production layout does not allow for the system to be installed in-line and the installation is not to interfere with the process flow through the factory.

After a period of technical consultation, an external MANTRA GA 360 Gas-to-Air smooth pipe heat exchanger was selected for installation. Benefits of the selected system include low fouling susceptibility due to the smooth (non-finned) design, ease of maintenance attributable to completely removable pipes, high reliability through multiple redundancy design, and installation completed with no interruption to production.
The original case was approved on the basis of a less than 25 month return on investment. The actual return on investment was 20 months.
