SLAUGHTERHOUSE INTEGRATES GAS-TO-WATER EXCHANGER TO HEAT DAILY FACILITY CLEANING WATER
Abundant energy supplies are necessary for the cleaning of a slaughterhouse facility and its equipment to protect against contamination. This facility houses a 66,000 gallon holding tank that provides the plant’s required daily cleaning water.

This facility was operating two natural gas fired steam boilers to provide the facilities hot water requirement. With plans to expand their facility, they also had plans to install a third boiler. A suitable energy recovery system required the capability to expand its throughput by 50% once the third boiler was installed.

A custom-designed thermosyphon heat pipe 2.8MW stainless steel finned heat pipe gas-to-water recuperator was selected for installation. The unit was designed to deliver 40,000Kg of emission-free hot water per hour to meet the total daily cleaning water requirement for this large facility.
The heat pipe recuperator was selected not only because of the inherent reliability advantages offered by the heat pipe technology, but also because of the unit’s custom design. The unit was manufactured with spare capacity to allow for the increased demand when the facility integrates a third steam boiler.
The exchanger operates at a highly efficient rate, recovering 86.9% of the waste heat available. The return on investment for this installation was under eight months.
